The Carolina Panthers have no doubts about quarterback Cam Newton as their starter heading into the 2019 NFL season. For now, head coach Ron Rivera expects quarterback Will Grier to soak up all the knowledge he can.

Grier has largely struggled to impress during the preseason thus far. According to Max Henson of the team's official website, Rivera is still confident he will be able to contribute in the future.

“He’s going to help us some day.”

There has been plenty of speculation regarding Newton's health throughout the offseason. Although the Panthers did not express any concerns about his status for the regular season, they went ahead and took Grier in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. While he was seen as somewhat of a project player, that did not stop all the talk about his ability to potentially take over under center.

That notion has quickly been dismissed by his underwhelming performance in the preseason. He struggled to find his footing in the first two games against the Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills, performances highlighted by a couple of questionable interceptions. He finally managed to show some promise against the New England Patriots, though it was hardly enough to solidify a bid to be Newton's backup.

Grier will likely enter the season as the Panthers' third-string quarterback. If he is hoping to prove Rivera's comments right, he will first need to find a way to earn the No. 2 job. It appears the rookie still has a long way to go in his development until then.
