The Carolina Panthers continue to wander the quarterback dessert with nary an oasis in sight. As things stand, it's still Sam Darnold navigating them through the sand.

That's what Panthers GM Scott Fitterer corroborated in a recent interview with Mike Florio on his PFT podcast.

Via Pro Football Talk:

“Sam is the number one guy right now,” Fitterer said on the Panthers' starting QB . “He has every opportunity to take it and run with it. We hope he does well. We’ve seen improvement already under [offensive coordinator] Ben McAdoo. He’s working hard, he’s throwing the ball well. He’s just got to take it and run with it. He’s got to own the position. The one thing we’re looking to do is stabilize the position. It’s been up and down, up and down.”

However, Fitterer also made it clear that Sam Darnold doesn't have the starting QB position on lock. As it stands, the returning Panthers signal-caller still has to earn it.

“We’re bringing in Matt Corral. P.J. Walker‘s already here. We’ll see how it goes. He’s in the lead right now, but until someone really owns that position, gives us an opportunity to win, it will always be up for grabs.”

The other options for the Panthers are both less experienced than Darnold, with Carrol coming in as a rookie and Walker entering just his third season in the NFL.

Either one would likely need to make huge strides at camp if they hope to displace Sam Darnold from the top of the Carolina totem pole. But the fact that the team is keeping it open as a possibility can only be good to raise the level of competition within the Panthers QB room.
