Along with all 31 other teams in the NFL, the Carolina Panthers have kicked off their training camp in the past week. The Panthers have made some recent roster moves—including bringing a familiar face back to the team.

According to David Newton of ESPN, safety Tre Boston is back along with signing guard Rishard Cook and kicker Joey Slye. As corresponding moves, the Panthers also waived guard Dorian Johnson and linebacker Brandon Chubb.

Most of these moves are meant for deeper parts of the roster besides Boston. Boston could step into the starting free safety position in training camp after he gets acclimated with the team—again.

Boston began his career with the Panthers being drafted in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. From there, Boston would spend three seasons in Carolina at safety.

In his three seasons with the Panthers, Boston started at free safety for 16 games. During those 16 games, he totaled three interceptions and 10 pass deflections. Then, he would play for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2017 and the Arizona Cardinals in 2018.

In the last two seasons, Boston has been an interception machine, with him corralling eight interceptions in both seasons combined. He also forced and recovered a fumble with the Cardinals last season.

The Panthers came into training camp expecting to start Rashaan Gaulden at free safety. But those plans could be scrapped after bringing Boston in at the position. Gaulden is entering his second season with the Panthers.

In this situation, it seems like veteran experience will trump potential as the Panthers will likely start Boston alongside Eric Reid in the secondary.
