Carolina Panthers quarterback Will Grier is doubtful to return against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday in his team's Week 17 matchup to close the 2019 NFL season, per ESPN's David Newton.

The 24-year-old rookie signal-caller made his debut last week against the Indianapolis Colts, starting in his first career professional game after the Panthers selected the West Virginia product in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. In his debut, the 6-foot-1 gunslinger threw for 224 yards, failing to connect with a receiver for a touchdown all game and tossing three interceptions in the process. It was a … learning process to say the least about Grier's first game under center.

The Panthers rolled with the first-year quarterback last week and Sunday against the Saints after former undrafted signal-caller Kyle Allen lost his last six starts. Allen had to take over in Week 2 for ex-MVP quarterback Cam Newton, who has been sidelined ever since and whose tenure with Carolina appears to be in jeopardy.

The upheaval in Charlotte doesn't stop at the quarterback position, as the Panthers fired longtime head coach Ron Rivera several weeks ago. Team owner David Tepper has stepped in to reconfigure the front office and begin interviewing head coach candidates, including Baylor's Matt Rhule, who interviewed with the New York Jets last year, and their interim head coach Perry Fewell.

It's unclear what will happen with Grier and Allen in the future for the quarterback competition, but in all likelihood Newton will be gone in 2020, possibly via trade.
