Somehow forgotten this season, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is good at the game of football. Maybe he hasn't developed into the top-tier star some were once projecting, but he remains one of the few “actually good” gunslingers in the National Football League.

Over the weekend, Cam Newton managed to join some rarefied company, as he became only the fourth quarterback in league history to rush for at least 4,000 yards. For those bad at math, that is a lot for a guy who plays a position not exactly known for running around the field.

Newton now has 4,002 career rushing yards. Only Michael Vick (6,109), Randall Cunningham (4,928) and Steve Young (4.239) have more. It is obviously worth noting that the Panthers gunslinger is still only 28. He has plenty of time, and definitely should pass at least Young and Cunningham.

The Vick number seems close, but if you were a fan of the Carolina football team, maybe you should actively root for Newton to never get close to that mark. If he does, it would likely mean that the Panthers never figured out a way to rely on players who are not named Cam Newton.

Newton has, since day-one, been tasked with carrying all of the team's offensive burdens. It is why he already has so many rushing yards. Had he been surrounded with better offensive talent, or coaches who didn't put him in harm's way so often, maybe he wouldn't be joining such elite company.

Also, this is a random reminder about how good Randall Cunningham was. I miss him.
