The Carolina Panthers have been regarded as a team that could target a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, the Panthers could have their sights set on a quarterback in next year's draft. According to Bleacher Report's Matt Miller, Carolina is expected to ‘tank' for Trevor Lawrence.

Earlier this offseason, the Panthers hired Matt Rhule as the team's next head coach. With a new coaching staff in place, it is unclear what Carolina will choose to do at the quarterback position in 2020.

The first option could be for the Panthers to allow Cam Newton to play the final year of his contract. At the same time, Carolina could add one of the incoming prospects in this year's draft.

Of course, Joe Burrow is the presumptive No. 1 pick to the Cincinnati Bengals. But Carolina has been considered a team that could make a blockbuster trade to move up and select either Tua Tagovailoa or Justin Herbert.

It is well-documented that the term ‘tanking' isn't something that teams think highly of. In the event that these rumors are actually legitimate, the Panthers would likely be open to trading Newton.

As for Lawrence, he is considered by many to be the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft . He's possibly one of the best quarterbacks to come out of college in recent memory. Given that, there are going to be quite a few teams hoping to land the Clemson product next offseason.

At this moment, it's tough to believe that the Panthers would be willing to throw away their first season under Rhule in hopes to land Lawrence. Even though Carolina would love to be the team that drafts Lawrence, the phrase ‘tank for Trevor' is a bit premature.
