The Carolina Panthers had one of the worst quarterback rooms in the NFL last season, with the trio of Cam Newton, Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker combining to lose eight of their last nine games to close out the campaign. Heading into minicamp, Carolina has Darnold, the incumbent, and Matt Corral, who arrived via the draft this spring.

All the while, there have been rumblings about the Panthers adding a veteran quarterback to the mix, such as Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns or Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers. According to the latest Panthers rumors from The Athletic, the franchise is still interested in a Mayfield trade, though there's a catch.

“According to league sources, at least some in the Panthers’ organization remain interested in Mayfield, but only if the Browns are willing to pay a sizable percentage of his $18.8 million salary.”

Per the rumors, the Panthers still have interest in a Mayfield trade, though they would like the Browns to pay a “sizeable percentage of his $18.8 million salary.”

That is quite the ask for the Browns, who traded for Deshaun Watson amid his legal troubles. Cleveland then shelled out $230 million to Watson, who could be disciplined by the NFL for his misconduct related to a bevy of lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault.

The Panthers. understandably, don't want to shell out all that cash to Mayfield with two other quarterbacks on the roster. However, the Browns likely want no parts of taking on more of Mayfield's salary, given the money they're paying Watson.

Perhaps that's why Rhule and company are “warming to the idea” of Darnold and Corral in the quarterback room in 2022.
