There has been plenty of speculation regarding the future of Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. It appears the writing may be own the wall for a potential trade.

Team owner David Tepper has sounded off on Newton's status as the starter being dependent on his health. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the fact that they are currently in a rebuilding stage has also played a factor in his potential departure.

“It was not just his health that raises trade questions, it looks like the Carolina Panthers are probably heading into much more of a rebuild than we first realized when they hired head coach Matt Rhule and that would likely have them looking for a potential trade partner for Cam Newton.”

Rapoport indicated that Newton's surgically-repaired foot is nearing a full recovery and he will be able to resume activities at some point in March. This would allow them to gauge the potential trade market for him at that point.

Newton has done what he can to downplay the notion of this departure after confirming his plans to start for Carolina in the 2020 NFL season during Super Bowl week. However, it remains to be seen if the interest is mutual with the team in the midst of a grueling rebuild. Parting ways with their longtime starter under center could simply be the next step for them.

If the Panthers do opt to trade Newton, it is safe to say there will be no shortage of interest with al the quarterback-hungry teams around the league. The Los Angeles Chargers, Indianapolis Colts, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been pegged as potential trade candidates.
