The Carolina Panthers face a tough decision on whether or not to bring back Cam Newton in 2020. While speaking about the situation, David Newton of ESPN believes that Teddy Bridgewater may end up being Newton's successor in Carolina.

Before diving into the Newton ordeal, it's important to note that the Panthers hired Matt Rhule as their next head coach. In addition, they also brought in Joe Brady to become the team's new offensive coordinator.

Considering the contract that Rhule received, he'll likely have a say in what the Panthers do at quarterback. Of course, the first option would be to keep Newton and move forward with him as the starter in 2020.

But with Newton's recent injury history, there's a chance he is released or traded this offseason. The veteran signal-caller is heading into the final year of his contract and could become a free agent in 2021.

Regardless of what the Panthers do, it's apparent that neither Kyle Allen or Will Grier will start next season. Therefore, if Newton is in fact gone, Carolina could target someone in free agency. That specific someone could be Bridgewater from the New Orleans Saints.

Somewhat similar to the Panthers, the Saints are waiting on Drew Brees to make a decision on his future. If he does return for another season, there's a decent chance Bridgewater isn't brought back in free agency. As a result, the Panthers would be able to add the free-agent quarterback.

By adding Bridgewater, that would give Carolina an opportunity to select Luke Kuechly's replacement in the 2020 NFL Draft. Kuechly surprisingly announced his retirement from the NFL after eight seasons with the Panthers.

The Panthers have some time to mull over their options. Provided that, don't be surprised if Bridgewater is the starter in Carolina next season.
