The Carolina Panthers decided to release Cam Newton earlier this offseason, but that was before they attempted to trade him. In a sit-down with Odell Beckham Jr. and Victor Cruz, Newton revealed how he learned that Carolina wanted to trade him this offseason.

For the most part, teams in the NFL will typically inform their star players if they are considering a trade involving them. However, the Panthers kept Newton in the dark, even though they already made their mind up on moving on without him.

While Newton handled it professionally, the All-Pro quarterback had a chip on his shoulder this offseason. After Carolina was unable to find a trade partner, they released him in favor of signing Teddy Bridgewater.

Following his release, Newton continuously posted workout videos to show teams he was ready for next season. Nevertheless, there wasn't much interest in his services due to COVID-19 preventing teams from conducting a normal physical. But after three months of waiting, Newton finally signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots.

In the past two seasons, Newton has dealt with an assortment of injuries to his shoulder and foot. Altogether, he missed a total of 16 games, prompting the Panthers to part ways with the former NFL MVP.

But at the least, with the contributions he made to the franchise, Carolina could have at least notified him of their decision ahead of time. Instead, they've given Newton something to use as extra motivation as he enters his first season with the Patriots.
