Following a debacle during the past year where the New England Patriots accused the Houston Texans of tampering with Patriots' Player Personnel Director Nick Caserio, New England has elected to extend Caserio's contract, per Ben Volin in the Boston Globe.

Caserio, who has served in his current role since 2008, was a free agent after this season. The Texans were expected to sign Caserio as the team's general manager, but it did not come to fruition. Instead, Houston will continue to exist without a GM.

Caserio had ties with former Patriots coach and current Texans head coach Bill O'Brien. Caserio was a big candidate for a general manager position before New England locked him up for the next few years.

The 44-year-old executive has been a member of the Patriots organization since 2001 and has even served as an assistant coach, mentoring the wide receivers in 2007 and the offensive in 2002. Before the Patriots, Caserio spent three seasons as a graduate assistant at Saginaw Valley State and Central Michigan.

Caserio's return for the Patriots is a breath of fresh are for a franchise that has seen a lot of coaching changes in the last few seasons. Matt Patricia, Brian Flores, and several assistant coaches, plus current NFL GM's Bob Quinn and Jon Robinson and several scouts on the personnel side are all examples of former Patriots to pursue opportunities with new teams recently.

On the field, New England would finish 12-4 in the regular season—their 17th straight season with double-digit wins. The Patriots would eventually be upset by the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Wild Card round.
