New England Patriots running back James White made his long-awaited return to the field on Monday against the Kansas City Chiefs. This was the first time White suited up to play following the shock death of his father in a vehicular accident a couple of weeks ago.

White was understandably emotional after the game, as he discussed the impact his dad had not only in his football  career, but throughout his entire life as well:

“I mean, he meant a whole lot. He’s one of the biggest reasons why I played football,” White said, via Michael Hurley of CBS Boston. “Being a little kid, seeing my brother play, knowing that my dad played football, it kind of motivated me to go out there and play football. My dad, he was a coach for me growing up. Obviously, it’s not always fun having your dad be your coach, but he pushed me, made me who I am today. I miss getting that text that he would usually send me on Saturday nights before games. He’d give me … just simple texts he would send to get me preparing for the games and stuff.”

White's mother was also a victim in the crash, but fortunately, she has since been recovering from her injuries. It remains unclear how far along she is in her recovery, but everyone is remaining positive that she is able to pull through.

White had a relatively good showing in his first game back, rushing for 21 yards on three carries. He also caught seven passes, which resulted in a 38-yard gain for his squad.

Despite James White's return, however, the Pats were unable to hold off a late surge from the Chiefs. The defending champs emerged victorious, 26-10. Clearly, they were missing the services of the superstar quarterback, Cam Newton, who was forced to sit out the contest after he tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend.
