The New England Patriots just got a little worse on the defensive side of the football. Something, you know, the team couldn't actually afford to have happen. Talented linebacker, Dont’a Hightower has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

According to a report from NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport on Thursday morning, a shoulder injury that Dont’a Hightower suffered was a torn pectoral muscle. While many were unsure as to the severity of it, Rapoport is reporting it is bad enough that the linebacker is gone the way of the dinosaurs.

This is obviously awful news for the Patriots. As already mentioned, New England's defense is pretty much a debacle.

It now appears as though even more of a burden will be put on the shoulders of Tom Brady. The veteran, and future Hall of Fame, quarterback will probably have to throw for nearly 400 yards and approximately eleventy-billion touchdowns per game if the Patriots plan on winning some games.

The good news for New England is the same good news it has had for decades. The Patriots play in a historically woeful division that currently features the Miami Dolphins starting a CBS NBA writer at quarterback and the New York Jets — a team that is, uh, the New York Jets.

Oddly enough, New England does have some (relatively) solid depth at the linebacker position. It will be interesting to see what kind of shuffling the team does from here on out. Maybe even a trade or two before the deadline passes.
