The New England Patriots abruptly released Cam Newton on Tuesday, paving the way for rookie Mac Jones to be the starting quarterback. However, it appears there were several reasons that factored into the Patriots cutting ties with Newton. Via Adam Beasley of PFT:

Well, there it is. Jones has been playing so well that it ultimately forced Newton out. Also, it seems as the former MVP wasn't fully vaccinated which bothered people in the organization. Frankly, he's not the same QB he once was, either.

The Patriots could've ultimately traded him instead, but now, it gives Newton the chance to sign wherever he pleases. A starting job is going to be very hard to come by for the veteran though, considering most teams already know who their first-string quarterbacks are going to be.

But, there are several teams that could use a legitimate backup. Also, the Texans may be a one-off club who may sign Newton with the thought of him being their starter. Deshaun Watson's status is up in the air and a trade could happen very soon. Newton also spoke out after his release from the Patriots and is certainly in good spirits.

A fresh start elsewhere could be great for him.
