The New England Patriots and legendary head coach Bill Belichick are currently in the midst of a major rut, which is actually putting it pretty lightly at this point. With the Patriots losing once again on Sunday afternoon, the San Francisco 49ers absolutely throttled Belichick and company despite the game being played in New England.

In fact, the Patriots were upended by the 49ers so viciously that Belichick reached a new low for his New England tenure (via ProFootballReference).

Of course, things are presently in flux in New England as future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady now plays for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With such a major change being made in New England, it is only natural for the heralded AFC East franchise to hit some turbulence along the way, considering that Brady spent two decades under center for Belichick.

The Patriots did manage to find another former league MVP in former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton to replace Brady, though he struggled mightily in Week 7 against the 49ers. Newton played so poorly that the Patriots were already out of the game come the fourth quarter with Belichick making a move to backup Jarrett Stidham to close out this forgettable outing.

Prior to coming up way short at the hands of the 49ers in Week 7, the Patriots previously lost to the middling Denver Broncos in Week 7 as New England now sits at an underwhelming 2-4 on the year. As it stands today, the Patriots are in third place in the AFC East division behind both the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins.
