Josh McDaniels seemed destined to once again leave New England this offseason in order to become the Indianapolis Colts. But in a stunning turn of events, McDaniels turned his back on the Colts in the last minute to stay on as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator.

Belichick was asked about McDaniels and his role on the team after everything that went down this offseason.

“Josh's role is the same as it's always been,” Belichick said, per Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston.

Are you grooming McDaniels to be your successor?

“I'm trying to coach our football team the best I can to help it have a good year in 2018,” he said. “That's what I'm trying to do . . .

“I've had a long relationship with Josh and a good one. I think he's a great coach. I love working with Josh.”

A recent report indicates that Belichick isn’t happy with how the whole McDaniels situation played out because of Tom Brady and owner Robert Kraft’s alleged involvement in McDaniels’ sudden U-turn.

Regardless, it doesn’t seem as if Belichick has issues with McDaniels like he does with Brady and Kraft, so the fact that he stayed on as OC this season shouldn’t be that big a deal. And even if he did, he’d most likely still do what’s best to make the most of the situation.

Thanks to Brady and McDaniels, the offensive side of the ball has been the Patriots’ big strength over the last couple of years. And the fact that they’ve maintained that continuity at coordinator should bode well for their chances of being a top offense again this year.
