With training camp in full swing, the New England Patriots have gotten their first real look at quarterback Cam Newton. It appears head coach Bill Belichick is liking what he sees so far.

According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, Belichick praised Newton for his work ethic:

“Cam’s a hard-working kid. He really is,” Belichick said.

“He’s worked very hard, I’d say, as all of our players have,” Belichick said. “I’d say that certainly for all the quarterbacks, at that position, those guys have been locked in, focused and confident in what they’re able to do and the information they have to give to the team — play-calling, adjustments, audibles, protection adjustments, things like that. That’s all going pretty well.”

The Patriots made headlines with their decision to bring in Newton as Tom Brady's successor under center. Although the former NFL MVP has made it clear that he has a chip on his shoulder going into the 2020 NFL season, Belichick's comments indicate that there is still plenty of work to be done before he can make it come to fruition.

The restrictions placed in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have offered up it'd own set of challenges for players trying to get properly acquainted with their new teams. Meanwhile, no team has had more players opt out this season due to the ongoing pandemic, and this has led expectations being tempered.

The onus may very well fall on Newton to be tasked with carrying the load on offense. It will be interesting to see just how long it takes for Belichick to name him the clear-cut starter.
