It’s a classic matchup between a teacher and former student this coming Sunday in Detroit, as Bill Belichick and his New England Patriots will face the Detroit Lions, whose coach is former Pats defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.

Although he knows how familiar Patricia is with how things work in Foxboro, Belichick doesn’t seem to be bothered by the possibility of his former assistant outsmarting him on Sunday, per Tyler Sullivan of 247 Sports.

“Well, yeah, the most important thing right now is for us to get ready to play the Detroit Lions, so what they do and how they do it and the players they do it with, that's really all we're focused on,” Belichick said during his Tuesday conference call.

“I'm sure Matt will do a great job of having them prepared for us and he'll game plan us the way he always does, the best way he can match up with his team with whatever he perceives our challenges to be. I don't really know what that is yet. You'll have to ask him what those are, but we'll have to be ready for those things and go out and be able to execute them.”

Although Patricia is best known for his work as the head defensive tactician of the Patriots, he also served other roles for the franchise. He started his career in the NFL in 2004 as an offensive assistant under Belichick then went on to hold numerous positions such as assistant offensive line coach, linebackers coach, and safeties coach before helming the role of the defensive coordinator from 2012-2017.

Matt Patricia and his Lions are still winless after taking back-to-back losses to the New York Jets and the San Francisco 49ers and it’s not going to be easier for them with the reigning AFC champions standing in their way this Sunday.
