The New England Patriots continue to chug in the right direction after a slow start to the season, currently riding a three-game win streak that has put them atop the AFC East. However, there has been a notable lack of red zone involvement for Pro Bowl tight end Rob Gronkowski, who hasn't scored a touchdown since the season opener. Head coach Bill Belichick couldn't care less.
Belichick voiced no concern over that matter with his focus directly on the next opponent in the Chicago Bears on Sunday. (h/t Tyler Sullivan of 247 Sports)
“Yeah, we're really just worried about this game,” the head coach said on Friday. “Try to go out there and beat Chicago, so that's what we're going to focus on. If we score enough points and hold them to fewer, then we'll win. That's the goal.”
He added: “Our goal is not to go out there and create stats for an individual player. We just don't think that way. We try to go out and win the game, so whatever we need to do to win the game then that's what our goal is. Our goal is not to create individual stats. That's just not how we do it.”
Gronkowski has put together a productive start to the season with 26 catches for 405 receiving yards, but he has just one touchdown. Throughout his career, he has been a magnet for the end zone especially in the red zone, tallying up 77 career touchdowns. His lack of production in the red zone has not been due to his play on the field, but rather the talent around him.
Rookie running back Sony Michel has emerged as a workhorse running back that has been a huge asset in the red zone, and the addition of former Pro Bowl wide receiver Josh Gordon gives them another huge receiving threat. On top of that, wideout Julian Edelman is back in the fold after serving his four-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.
