Throughout the 2020 NFL Draft, everyone was curious to see if the New England Patriots would select a quarterback, just for them not to take one. Following the draft, Bill Belichick spoke out on New England not drafting a quarterback.

“If we feel like we find the right situation, we'll certainly draft them. We've drafted them in multiple years, multiple points in the draft,” he said, via ESPN's Mike Reiss. “Didn't work out the last three days. That wasn't by design. We just tried to do the best we could with what we had this weekend.”

The Patriots are planning for life after Tom Brady, leading many to believe that they'd select a quarterback in this year's draft. After all, Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer were the only quarterbacks on the roster heading into the draft.

Nevertheless, New England came up empty-handed at the quarterback position, but Belichick said it ‘wasn't by design'. Perhaps Belichick and the Patriots had their eyes on someone like Jalen Hurts before the Philadelphia Eagles surprisingly took him in the second round.

Or maybe they wanted James Morgan, who they did some research on, that ended up going to the New York Jets. Regardless of what transpired, Belichick seems to be comfortable with who is already on the roster. Over the course of the offseason, players on the Patriots have expressed confidence in Stidham.

On the other hand, not drafting a quarterback could reignite the rumors of New England possibly signing Cam Newton in free agency. Even though the Patriots could use another quarterback on the roster, Belichick made it clear that they were going to draft one just to draft one.
