New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has apparently been spending time with former Dallas Cowboys head coach and current New York Giants assistant Jason Garrett.

Bill Belichick and Jason Garrett have reportedly linked up while spending summers in Nantucket, Massachusetts (via Mike Reiss of ESPN):

Belichick’s affinity for Nantucket, Massachusetts, is well documented, and now that former Cowboys coach and current Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett spends time on the island, the two have once again broken bread with each other. That has continued this summer, which serves up a reminder of how football connects people in different ways. For those keeping track, it’s 76 seasons of professional football between them — Belichick enters his 46th year coaching in the NFL, while Garrett’s playing career spanned 1989-2004, and he has been coaching in the league since 2005.

Belichick and Garrett offer rather stark contrasts in terms of past success and public perceptions.

Whereas Bill Belichick is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in NFL history, Garrett was frequently chastised during his 10-year run with the Dallas Cowboys.

Although Garrett went a respectable 85-67 in those 10 years, he guided the team to the playoffs just three times, and earned two playoff victories.

The Cowboys started the 2019 season 3-0 before going 5-8 over the course of their next 13 games. Garrett was fired at the end of the year, and now prepares for a new role as the offensive coordinator of the Giants.

Meanwhile, Bill Belichick consistently seems to get the most out his Patriots teams.

That said, Bill Belichick is also in a transitory season. He will be without Tom Brady for the first time in 20 years, and the Pats are hoping a revitalized Cam Newton can continue to bring New England success.

Despite their differences, Belichick and Garrett seem to have found common ground in Nantucket. It is worth wondering whether Bill Belichick is hoping to glean bits of information from the offensive-minded Garrett.
