The New England Patriots decided to bench Brian Hoyer during the team's 26-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night. Despite the limitations the Patriots had during the week due to Cam Newton's positive COVID-19 test, Hoyer avoided making any excuses for his poor performance.

Via Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald:

“It was a whirlwind. But that’s just the world we’re living in, in 2020. You just have to make the most of it. It had nothing to do with the bad plays that I had.”

The final score of the game between the Patriots and the Chiefs didn't tell the whole story of what really transpired. On the surface, by just looking at the box score, it appeared as if Kansas City laid waste to New England.

However, if it weren't for a couple of questionable decisions from Hoyer, the Patriots actually would have had a decent chance to win the game. It all began with Hoyer driving the offense down the field before halftime, putting them in range for a field goal.

All the Patriots needed to do was kick a field goal and go into halftime tied at six with the reigning Super Bowl champions. Instead, Hoyer took a head-scratching sack as the time wound down in the first half, with him frantically calling for a timeout — even though they didn't have any remaining.

Then, in the second half, Hoyer drove the team down the field again, only to fumble the ball on a strip-sack by Frank Clark.

Hoyer could have said the peculiar situation involving COVID-19 led to him making costly mistakes for the offense. Instead, the veteran took the high road after being benched for Jarrett Stidham in the second half, admitting that he needs to play better. After seeing the offense on Monday night, the Patriots are anxious to see when Cam Newton can return to the team after testing positive for COVID-19.
