Cam Newton officially became a member of the New England Patriots on Wednesday, but that didn't stop him from studying the Patriots' playbook ahead of time.

On Tuesday, Newton took to Instagram to post a photo of himself going over his new system, calling it “calculus.”

Newton agreed to a one-year, incentive-laden deal with New England late last month. He was cut by the Carolina Panthers earlier this offseason.

The 31-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Auburn, was originally selected by the Panthers with the first overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Newton immediately established himself as one of the NFL's brightest young stars, making the Pro Bowl in his rookie campaign after throwing for 4,051 yards, 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions and adding 706 yards and 14 scores as a rusher.

The College Park, Ga. native spent nine years in Carolina overall, with his best season coming during the 2015-16 campaign when he won the MVP award and led the Panthers to 15 wins and a Super Bowl appearance.

However, since then, Newton has been quite the same. His decline can largely be attributed to injury issues, as he has undergone a pair of shoulder surgeries as well as a foot surgery since the end of 2016. He had his foot procedure earlier this offseason to correct a problem that limited him to just two games in 2019.

Newton will be competing with Jarrett Stidham for the Patriots' starting quarterback job. With Tom Brady now in Tampa Bay, whoever wins that role will certainly have some gigantic shoes to fill.
