The New England Patriots' newest gunslinger in 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton is obviously generating the biggest buzz in the team's practices thus far. However, the attention he's brought hasn't guaranteed him as the Week 1 starter. A competition within the Patriots' quarterback room is still going to develop in the days to come.

The Providence Journal detailed how the first day of padded practice went for the Patriots' quarterbacks:

On Monday, the Patriots put on pads for the first time this year and the media was there for 90-minute practice. The emphasis on this day was clear as the Pats focused on the run game, run blocking and run defense. In the much anticipated quarterback competition, the Patriots coaching staff rotated in Brian Hoyer, Jarrett Stidham and Cam Newton. There was no clear first-team quarterback. For example, Hoyer started one drill followed by Stidham and Newton.

The former Carolina Panther officially joined the Patriots side on July 8, 2020, when he signed a one-year deal with the team. The contract was met with rave reviews for the Patriots as they had nothing to lose and everything to gain bringing in a motivated quarterback like Newton.

His veteran experience and individual accolades spoke highly of his ability to lead a franchise from the forefront, similar to what he did with the 2015 Carolina Panthers team. He aims to do the same with a depleted Patriots side that is looking to make noise despite missing some important pieces. Sophomore Jarrett Stidham and returning veteran Brian Hoyer will also vie to play under center in the upcoming season.

There will be no room for error for all three quarterbacks as they vie for the starting playmaker spot. The chosen gunslinger will first see action in the team's opening game on September 13 against the Miami Dolphins.
