Cam Newton is putting the finishing touches on the one-year deal he signed with the New England Patriots last weekend.

Newton is in New England to complete his physical, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Rapoport noted the team does not expect any complications.

Cam missed all but two games last season after undergoing foot surgery due to a Lisfranc injury. But he has ruthlessly attacked rehab and workouts this offseason, including throwing with the likes of Odell Beckham Jr. Newton also has a history of shoulder issues, but the Pats are not anticipating such a problem will resurface.

The 2015 NFL MVP was cut by the Carolina Panthers after the team signed Teddy Bridgewater in free agency. Newton repeatedly stated he wanted to remain with the Panthers, and that it was their choice to cut ties. But after the team failed to find a trade partner, the waiting game began.

Cam had been linked to the Patriots throughout the offseason after Tom Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But the Pats had limited cap space and seemed intent on letting veteran Brian Hoyer and 2019 fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham compete for the starting job.

However, New England made its play for Newton this past Sunday, offering him an incentive-laden deal and making him the projected starter at the drop of a hat.

If Newton gives the Pats a clean bill of health, he could transform their offense. Cam has an exceptional knack for extending plays and being a weapon outside the pocket. No doubt offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will add some run-pass options and scheme around Newton's abilities.

But first, the two sides must finalize the deal. It appears to be a mere formality.
