New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton recently suffered a right hand injury during OTAs, but he's set to take his full complement of reps at minicamp this week, according to Jim McBride of The Boston Globe.

This is good news after Newton hurt his right hand about a week and a half ago. He was clearly in some pain as he left the practice field and was tended to by trainers. Luckily, the injury was clearly not serious and he's ready to roll for minicamp.

Newton enters minicamp as the starting quarterback for the Patriots after signing another one-year deal, but there's plenty of competition on the roster. New England drafted Mac Jones with the No. 15 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and the assumption is he'll wind up being the starting quarterback at some point down the road. Another youngster in Jarrett Stidham is still around, and veteran Brian Hoyer is back for another go-round.

The 32-year-old started all 15 games he played in last season for the Patriots, going 7-8 in those starts. He completed 65.8% of his passes for 2,657 yards and only eight touchdowns to 10 interceptions. Newton did rush for 592 yards and 12 touchdowns, so he did a good amount of damage on the ground.

Newton had his moments as the starting quarterback, but he also had his struggles through the air as New England missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2008 season. His starting job shouldn't be considered safe given the options behind him, so the veteran will need to prove he can still be an effective passer if he wants to keep his gig.
