New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton has wasted no time in making his presence felt at training camp. Although there was plenty of speculation regarding his fit, teammates and coaches alike have shared nothing but praise for him leading up to the 2020 NFL season.

Newton made it a point to refer to wide receiver N'Keal Harry as “Doughboy” during post-practice conferences. Wide receiver Julian Edelman revealed during an appearance on WEEI's “The Greg Hill Show” that the former NFL MVP also has a nickname for him:

It is certainly encouraging to see that Newton has already developed quite a rapport with his new receiving corps. Aside from nicknames, he has also come up with personalized handshakes for a number of teammates. This should help pay huge dividends for his transition under center with the 2020 campaign just weeks away.

The fact that the charismatic Newton has gotten his chemistry going with the wideouts hardly comes as any surprise. While the coaching staff has expressed their excitement with his dual-threat skill set, the onus will fall on Edelman and Harry to serve as his go-to options in the passing game.

Reports indicate that Newton has established himself as the clear-cut starter over quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham in camp. Regardless, he has countered this by indicating Hoyer and Stidham still have a better grasp of the offense than he does. Of course, this should hardly come as any surprise given the circumstances of an unprecedented offseason due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
