Despite winning the 2015 MVP and leading his team to a Super Bowl, New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton still has a lot of prove as a football player.

In his first training camp with New England, his daily dedication is earning him the respect of his new teammates.

“Every morning you come in, and you walk by his locker – whether it’s 6 am, 5:30 am – his locker is already open, he’s already here. And when you’re getting ready to leave, you see him with Patriots gear on doing something,” Patriots cornerback Jason McCourty said on The Greg Hill Show on 93.7 WEEI on Friday.

In the wake of Tom Brady's departure to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, second-year signal-caller Jarrett Stidham was slotted as Bill Belichick's presumptive Week 1 starter, flanked by veteran Brian Hoyer. However, after a poor showing in camp from Stidham, Newton seems to be winning the QB competition.

Newton has played well in training camp and has received the majority of reps in practice. He's also reportedly working his tail off to learn Josh McDaniels's offense.

Newton was released by the Carolina Panthers in March after nine seasons with the franchise that selected him no. 1 overall 2011. The 31-year-old signed a one-year, incentive-laden contract with New England after an underwhelming free agency period revealed lukewarm interest in his services by the other 30 teams.

Cam Newton is clearly motivated to show the football world that he can still perform at a high level. If he does, he'll earn himself a proper, overdue pay day next offseason.
