Before the New England Patriots agreed to a contract extension with stud defensive back Devin McCourty, the then-free-agent-to-be was preparing to become a free agent. McCourty, 32, had a shortlist of teams including the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins as potential destinations.

Per Albert Breer in Sports Illustrated, via Patriots Wire:

“For the second time in his career, he was set to become a free agent,” Breer wrote in his latest Monday Morning Quarterback column. “But once the Patriots picked up his brother Jason’s option, he had a pretty good idea he’d be staying put (something he detailed last week in the Players Tribune), after initially thinking he might be bound for the Giants or Dolphins.”

McCourty will stay in New England alongside twin brother Jason, whose team option was picked up by the Patriots this offseason, too.

McCourty had a fantastic 2019 campaign sharing the secondary with Defensive Player of the Year cornerback Stephon Gilmore. McCourty recorded five interceptions and two forced fumbles along with 46 solo tackles last season despite the Patriots getting bumped in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs earlier in Jan. 2020.

McCourty first joined the Patriots as a first-round selection in the 2010 NFL Draft out of Rutgers, later being selected for two Pro Bowls over the course of his 10-year tenure in Foxborough. Along the way, McCourty also won three Super Bowl titles with the franchise.

The Dolphins and Giants are both currently coached by former Patriots assistants, with Brian Flores joining Miami last offseason and Joe Judge agreeing to coach the Giants last January.
