Veteran New England Patriots wide receiver Eric Decker has announced his retirement from the NFL after eight seasons. Decker posted his announcement on his Instagram account.

“It has been my childhood dream and my passion to play the game of football,” Decker wrote. “I was very fortunate and blessed to have had the opportunity to have those dreams fulfilled and to have played with such extremely talented and hard-working teammates, coaches and staff. This has been a passion inside of me since I was a little boy but I know now it is time to hang up my helmet and start a new chapter in my life. I love football and always will. It will continue to be a part of my life.”

Decker was originally a third-round pick by the Denver Broncos in the 2010 NFL Draft. He spent his first four seasons with the Broncos before joining the New York Jets for three seasons. He played last season with the Tennessee Titans and just signed for the Patriots earlier this month.

However, Decker has struggled in New England during training camp and was reportedly in danger of not even making the 53-man roster.

Decker’s retirement now makes it three wide receivers that have left the Patriots this month alone. They released Jordan Matthews after he suffered a hamstring injury and also cut veteran Kenny Britt last week.

With Julian Edelman suspended for the first four weeks of the season, Chris Hogan, Cordarrelle Patterson, Phillip Dorsett, and rookie Braxton Berrios remain as their options at wide receiver.
