Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots offered a lifeline to a former first-round pick on Tuesday, bringing aboard Jabrill Peppers on a one-year deal, according to Adam Schefter. Peppers will be hoping to bounce back from an ACL tear he sustained last season and will get an opportunity to showcase his skills in New England in 2022.

His ACL recovery has him on track to be ready for the start of training camp, so he'll have ample time to show the Patriots what he can do coming back from the serious injury. The former New York Giants captain spent three years with the team after being acquired as part of the Odell Beckham Jr. trade in 2019.

The safety managed just six games in 2021 before the ACL injury cut his season short. He recorded 29 tackles, 4 QB hits, 2 tackles for loss, and 1 pass deflection prior to the injury.

Before his stint with the Giants, Peppers had been drafted 25th overall in the first round by the Cleveland Browns in the 2017 NFL Draft. The Michigan star was a standout player on defense and special teams at Ann Arbor, but didn't have quite the same impact in Cleveland, fumbling five times during his rookie season.

While he became a defensive captain for the Giants, the team opted against bringing him back amid the ACL injury, resulting in Belichick and Co. taking a chance on the 26-year-old in hopes of a bounce-back season. Peppers will join the Patriots' safeties group which currently consists of Devin McCourty, Adrian Phillips, Kyle Dugger, Joshuah Bledsoe, and Myles Bryant.
