It went down to the wire between the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. A late fumble, however, by the Patriots in their final drive allowed the Dolphins to escape by the skin of their teeth, 17-16.

The game also featured a tasty matchup between two young quarterbacks in Mac Jones of the Patriots and Tua Tagovailoa of the Dolphins. Jones, in his NFL debut, clearly outplayed the sophomore Tagovailoa after putting up 29-of-39 for 281 yards and one touchdown with zero interceptions.

After the game, even though they lost, Patriots cornerback JC Jackson still had the audacity to throw shade at Tagovailoa, who had some glaring errors (via Patriots reporter Andrew Callahan).

“That’s what Tua do. If he doesn’t have his first read, he’s just gonna throw the ball up.”

Spicy!

The 23-year-old Tagovailoa, while not as astounding as Jones, had a solid outing, finishing 16-of-27 for 202 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Not to mention, the Dolphins got the victory.

The Patriots are undergoing a well-documented transition after former MVP Cam Newton got cut, as coach Bill Belichick handed over the reins to the 23-year-old Jones. He had a smashing maiden outing with several chances to steal the win in the fourth quarter. But the 15th overall pick would have to wait a bit for his first NFL win.

JC Jackson, Mac Jones, and the rest of the Patriots will next face Zach Wilson and the New York Jets on Sunday.
