In the last few years, New England Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady has seen the conversation grow louder about him being regarded as being the greatest player to play the game at his position. His impressive team and individual success has thrust him into the forefront of that discussion.

In that same dialogue, Hall of Famer Joe Montana has been prominently mentioned as holding that prestigious title over the years since he stepped away from the game. With all that in mind, Montana stated during an appearance on NFL Network's Good Morning Football that it's hard to label just one player with that honor.

“I think it's only of those things that is really that the game changes so much. I have said this for a long period of time, it's hard to call anybody that. Obviously, Tom Brady is having a tremendous career. He is probably in the top if not the top quarterback that's played the game. But I say if you look back at Sammy Baugh and Otto Graham. I mean how do you compare how those guys played to what's the game is today.”

It is certainly difficult to assess the entire situation of each quarterback in their own generation as being comparable given how much the game has changed over the years. There have been many changes to the rules, equipment, and how important the play of the quarterback's production has become over the years.

It could be fairly argued that there is a high importance on the quarterback leading the offense with his arm. This in many ways has helped the later generation of players following Montana to put up bigger statistical numbers that overshadow what he accomplished during his time in the NFL.

There are many different wrinkles to the argument that make it a difficult discussion to pin down just one player holding that prestigious title.

If there is anything clear about it all is that Brady has put himself in that discussion regardless of the standards or bearings around it all.
