Joe Thuney of the New England Patriots didn't want to appear too smart to NFL teams. He revealed that he was asked by advisers to limit the number of questions he answered on the Wonderlic because he would score too high.

Thuney answered only 39 of the total 50 questions on the Wonderlic and scored an exact 39. The wacky story comes from Matt Verderame from the Stacking the Box podcast.

Thuney played for North Carolina State for two seasons before the New England Patriots selected him 78th in the 2016 draft. He may be just as lucky as he is smart. The offensive guard in his third year with New England. Thuney already has two Super Bowl rings under head coach Bill Belichick.

Verderame also reported that the Patriots have repeatedly declined trade offers for the left guard, leading to the belief that he is highly valued by the team and Bill Belichick.

The rejected trade offers are one thing, but Thuney has also started every game he has played for New England. Joe Thuney is entering into the last year of his four year rookie deal and if the previously stated indicators are correct, the Patriots may be inclined to offer him a big contract instead of letting him walk.

The Wonderlic story may be comical, but no one laughing in the offices in Foxborough weighing Thuney's on-field contributions against the salary cap hit he'd force them to take. The New England Patriots are coming off yet another Super Bowl victory. Joe Thuney, a 26-year-old with a lot of run (and smarts) left, has the Patriots in a bind, even though it is a good problem to have.
