The New England Patriots' 2020 offseason has not gone as planned. Rookie cornerback Joejuan Williams was arrested on Jan. 17 in Cumberland County after he was allegedly in possession of drugs, according to Caroline Sutton of News 5 Nashville.

Cumberland County sits 130 miles from Nashville. A Tennessee native, Williams played his college football at Vanderbilt before the Patriots selected him with the 45th pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Williams played limited snaps for the Patriots as a rookie. In nine games, he tallied four combined tackles and a pass deflection. According to Pro Football Reference, he allowed a 56.8 passer rating in coverage in his limited playing time.

According to the report, Tennessee Highway Patrol stopped Williams on Interstate 40 for speeding. Officers then allegedly found an unnamed controlled substance, prescription drugs and drug paraphernalia. The 22-year-old Nashville native is facing charges for speeding, possession of a controlled substance, possession of legend drugs without a prescription and possession of drug paraphernalia.

It is unknown where the Patriots go from here pertaining to Williams' situation. The NFL has yet to investigate the matter, and it is unknown if they will. Expect a possible suspension to come out of the situation for the promising soon-to-be second-year cornerback.

Though he played mostly as a special teamer in 2019, Williams is considered to be a promising figure in the Patriots' secondary. With change coming in New England — to potentially all parts of the roster — he is in-line to receive an uptick in snaps in year two. However, that may change with this report.
