New England Patriots wide receiver Jordan Matthews has suffered a “significant” hamstring injury, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Jeff Howe of The Athletic adds that Matthews hasn’t practiced since he suffered the injury Sunday and could be out for a while.

Matthews’ injury could explain why the Patriots brought in veteran wide receiver Eric Decker for a workout Monday.

Matthews, 26, arrived in New England this offseason via free agency after spending last season with their AFC East rivals, the Buffalo Bills. However, Matthews had an injury-hit season as he played in just 10 games, making 25 catches for 282 yards and a touchdown, before undergoing season-ending knee surgery.

Prior to his lone year in Buffalo, Matthews played his first three years in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a fairly productive receiver in his time with the Eagles as he averaged 75 catches for 891 yards and six touchdowns per season.

Matthews is expected to compete for playing time in a crowded Patriots receiving corps that still has some question marks after the departures of Brandin Cooks and Danny Amendola as well as the four-game suspension of Julian Edelman. Cordarrelle Patterson, Kenny Britt, Phillip Dorsett, and rookie Braxton Berrios are the other wideouts fighting for touches in the Pats offense this season.

If Matthews does miss a good amount of time due to that hamstring injury, his spot on the New England roster could potentially be under threat given the number of competitors the Patriots currently have at the wide receiver spots.
