On Wednesday, the New England Patriots placed wide receiver Josh Gordon on season-ending injured reserve. There is more to that story.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Gordon is suffering from two bone bruises in his knee that he dealt with before Week 6's win over the New York Giants. He will be waived off of the injured reserve when healthy.

Per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, he may be playing for a new NFL team sooner rather than later. Breer was told that Gordon ran 22 mph on the treadmill during a rehab session on Wednesday. Once he is cleared, he hopes to be released off of the injured reserve so he can find a new team.

It appears as if the Patriots and Gordon, 28, have mutually agreed to part ways. Luckily for New England, they recently traded a second-round pick to the Atlanta Falcons for veteran Mohammed Sanu. Their first-round selection, N'Keal Harry, is eligible to return to the 53-man roster soon.

The Patriots traded for Gordon during the 2018 regular season after a rumor leaked that he was struggling to stay sober as a member of the Cleveland Browns. He played in 11 games for New England in 2018 before the NFL gave him an indefinite suspension for violating the terms of his conditional reinstatement under the NFL drug policy.

The NFL conditionally reinstated Gordon in August. He returned to the team and did not receive any suspensions or fines. In 17 games with the Patriots, Gordon had 60 receptions for 1,007 yards and four touchdowns.

Gordon is a free agent after the 2019 season.
