New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels made one of the biggest decisions of his professional career yesterday. McDaniels backed out of an agreement to become the Indianapolis Colts’ new head coach in a move that has sent shockwaves around the league.

McDaniels’ agent, Bob LaMonte, was clearly not a fan of his client’s decision. According to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, LaMonte told McDaniels he was making potentially the biggest professional mistake of his career by backing out of the Colts job so late in the game.

Of course, McDaniels ultimately opted to act against his agent’s advice and went through with his plan to stay with the Patriots regardless of the potential ramifications to his career.

The good news for McDaniels is that he still has a job as the OC of one of the best teams in the NFL. He also has the presumptive inside track to succeed Bill Belichick as the next Patriots head coach whenever Belichick finally decides to retire.

But if things somehow don’t work out for him in New England, he would likely find it really difficult to find another head coaching opportunity in the future following his controversial decision. Teams and owners will not forget how he left the Colts high and dry anytime soon.

McDaniels most likely understood the magnitude of his decision and all of its possible ramifications, as his agent made clear. But he still felt that it was worth risking it all to stay in New England, and he got his wish. He must now live with whatever consequences arise from that decision moving forward.
