The Indianapolis Colts have been without a head coach for weeks. But, according to various reports, they are going to hire New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Reporters hoping to get some clarity on the situation failed to do so in the moments following the Patriots' loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII.

According to Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston, McDaniels was not in the mood to talk about the Colts job:

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio has reported that there is a possibility that McDaniels may stick with the Patriots rather than take the Colts job. During the pregame show Sunday, it was reported that McDaniels has yet to tell the Patriots he is leaving.

Ultimately, that means nothing. The Colts can’t offer him the job until the Super Bowl was over. So, technically, there has been nothing for him to share with the Patriots. Would it be nice for him to inform the team he is going to take the job when the Colts offer it? Of course, but he is under no obligation to do so.

McDaniels had a second interview with the Colts last week that an Indianapolis media outlet, Fox59, reported as going “off without a hitch.”

There could be only one reason why McDaniels might turn down the Colts now: he knows when Bill Belichick is going to retire. If Belichick were to go anytime in the near future, he would be the obvious candidate to take over. Who could blame him for wanting to stay and be handed the keys to the Patriots? Of course, if or when Belichick goes, chances are Tom Brady will not be far behind.
