The New England Patriots parted ways with tight end Rob Gronkowski following his retirement this offseason. It appears wide receiver Julian Edelman has an idea of a suitable replacement.

Duke forward Zion Williamson is preparing to be a top pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Edelman made one last attempt for him to make his way into the 2019 NFL Draft instead, via Twitter:

Edelman's intrigue is certainly understandable. Although Edelman has proven to be a reliable option in his own right, he knows his job is made much easier when there is another elite playmaker on the field. Williamson would certainly be able to oblige in this regard.

Williamson has taken the sports world by storm ever since his viral dunking clips from high school. While several NBA players feel they could have played in the NFL, he may be one of the very few that could be successful. There are plenty of similarities between Gronkowski and Williamson. Both are considered to be physical freaks of nature that also happen to possess the same coordination as their much smaller counterparts.

Gronkowski is one of the most physically-gifted athletes to play the tight end position. His rare blend of size and power made him a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. Edelman feels Williamson would be a viable option to take over in his stead. Unfortunately, the former Duke product is slated to take his physical skill set to the NBA hardwood this summer. As a result, the Patriots will need to address their current void in the upcoming draft.
