A misunderstanding regarding COVID-19 testing away from NFL facilities led to Cam Newton getting sidelined for five days. Mac Jones is making the most of his snaps with the first team. The New England Patriots are probably closer to naming the Alabama product their starter than most fans realize.

The rookie didn't waste any time showing off for the Patriots coaching staff as the first string quarterback. Per Jeff Howe of The Athletic, Jones demolished the starting New York Giants defense in a join practice. At one point, he completed 18 consecutive passes.

Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald chimed in on Jones' outstanding practice. The beat writer boldly proclaimed that the Patriots quarterback outplayed Daniel Jones through most of the practice.

The Patriots have a fiery quarterback competition on their hands because Jones is much more than a practice warrior. He's performed well in New England's two preseason performances.

Jones completed 13 of 19 pass attempts for 146 yards when the Patriots defeated Philadelphia 35-0. He went 13/19 for 87 yards in his preseason debut against Washington. Newton also performed well in those matchups.

Bill Belichick previously made it clear he plans on Newton opening the season at the helm. The former MVP already has a year of experience in New England's offense, but the Patriots plan on competing for the division title this year. Jones starting might give the offense more juice.
