One of the biggest storylines surrounding the aftermath of Super Bowl LII was the benching of cornerback Malcolm Butler. The decision had seemingly been made just prior to game time and since then, there have been a number of theories as to why it occurred.

While head coach Bill Belichick has chalked it up to a coach's decision', even Butler himself is still unsure about the reason behind his benching. However, according to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, he may have an idea:

“I never got a reason,” Butler said. “I feel like this was the reason: I got kind of sick. I went to the hospital. They probably thought I was kind of late on the game plan. I wasn't as locked in as I should be and could have been a matchup deal. It could have been anything.

It was a bit surprising to see Butler had been relegated to just special teams after proving himself with his heroics in Super Bowl XLIX. Regardless of the reasoning, it is clear that the decision did not work out in the Patriots' favor. Needless to say, it was a bitter end to an otherwise tumultuous year in New England.

Malcolm Butler has since moved on after recently signing a new deal with the Tennessee Titans. In a somewhat calculated turn of events, it was reported that the Patriots' offer last offseason was comparable to the one he just agreed to with the Titans. At this point, it is safe to assume the Butler will be looking forward to squaring off against his former team next year.
