A day after the Green Bay Packers parted ways with tight end Martellus Bennett, the New England Patriots jumped at the opportunity to bolster their receiving corps by bringing the 30-year-old back in the fold.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the Patriots have claimed Bennett off of waivers.

Last season, Bennett had a career year with the Patriots as they went on to win another Super Bowl title in the Tom Brady era. The well-traveled tight end played in all 16 regular-season games for New England and helped shoulder the load at the position with Rob Gronkowski on the mend.

Unfortunately for Bennett, his success in New England didn't carry over to his short time in Green Bay after he signed a lucrative three-year deal with the team. Bennett became a total nonfactor with the Packers ultimately leading to the team releasing him on Wednesday.

Bennett played seven games in a Packers uniform before being released this week. The veteran tight end caught 24 passes for 233 yards in a forgettable stint in Green Bay.

Now Bennett will join forces with Bill Belichick and Brady once again as they try to repeat as Super Bowl champions. The veteran will be a welcome addition for New England as it gives Brady another weapon that is familiar with the system.
