Fans of the New England Patriots had to experience one of their franchises legends in Rob Gronkowski walking away from the game. They may have to go through another retirement after the 2019 season with Matthew Slater.

In an article from Mike Reiss of ESPN, Slater talks about his future after this upcoming season. Here's an excerpt from the article talking about the special teams star and his time with the Patriots.

“I think I've always approached my career as every year could be my last year because of the nature of my position and the unique role I have on the team as a core special teams player. Obviously, at this stage of my career, my wife and I have to have a conversation as our family grows and our kids grow up, and as we evolve, decisions aren't just about what's best for me. It's about what's best for my wife and for my children. We're happy where we're at now, and we're just going to stay the course, thankful for the opportunity we have ahead of us and give it everything we got.”

Slater may not have the same merit as a Gronkowski, but both will go down as legends in New England in their own ways. Slater has spent all 12 of his seasons in the NFL with the Patriots.

Being with one team in your career is an honor, especially in today's sports. Phenomenally, Matthew's dad, Jackie Slater spent his whole 20-year career with the Los Angeles Rams.

The Patriots picked up Slater's option for the 2019 season so New England fans can breathe a sigh of relief for the time being. The 2019 season will be another year where Slater is one of the best special team guys in the NFL once again.
