New England Patriots wide receiver Mohamed Sanu is taking the next step on his way back to the field.

According to NFL Network's Michael Giardi, the 30-year-old wideout has shed the cast/boot of his surgically-repaired right ankle and has now begun rehabilitation in preparation for the upcoming season.

In October 2019, the Patriots traded for Sanu ahead of the October 29 trade deadline in exchange for a 2020 second-round draft pick. The eight-year veteran suffered a high ankle injury in a Week 11 clash against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019, prompting him to miss the next game before returning in Week 13.

With the injury not progressing to heal as expected, Sanu elected to have surgery to repair the ankle in the offseason. Sanu played eight games for the Patriots last year, recording 26 receptions for 217 yards and scoring one touchdown.

This development will come as good news for New England, as Sanu being healthy will solidify a receiving corps that only ranked 16th last year in touchdowns scored from the air. A fit Sanu could take the load off of star wideout Julian Edelman, second-year man N'Keal Harry and running back James White, helping Patriots' attack to be more potent.

Without legendary quarterback Tom Brady under center, Mohamed Sanu will have to build an affinity with either quarterback Jared Stidham or veteran backup Brian Hoyer tossing the football. With the start of the season being about four months away, Sanu should have ample time to rehab his ankle and work into getting back to game shape.
