The New England Patriots had to make way for incoming wide receiver Josh Gordon on the roster by releasing his former Cleveland Browns teammate, Corey Coleman. However, the Patriots liked enough of what they’ve seen from Coleman that they’re bringing him back to Foxboro.

As Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports, the Patriots have officially added Coleman to their practice squad days after cutting him.

The Patriots had just signed Coleman last week in one of their many recent moves to find more help at wide receiver before deciding to release him for Gordon.

Coleman, the 15th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, was traded by the Browns to the Buffalo Bills in training camp after two disappointing seasons in Cleveland. However, he also didn’t make the cut for the Bills.

Coleman has not yet lived up to his lofty draft status. He played just 19 games during his first two seasons in the league due to multiple hand injuries and recorded a mere 56 catches for 718 yards with five touchdowns.

It remains to be seen whether Coleman will get the chance to be promoted back up to the main roster at any point during the season. And if he does, he has yet to prove that he can be a consistently productive NFL receiver despite his first-round pedigree.

But with Gordon far from a certainty to stay on the field, at least the Patriots will have some additional insurance at receiver in their practice squad just in case the Gordon experiment doesn’t work out.
