The New England Patriots re-signed Cam Newton and selected Mac Jones in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, but that isn't stopping them from making more moves at the quarterback position. The Patriots are bringing back veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer on a one-year deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

In addition to Newton and Jones, New England has also Jarrett Stidham at quarterback, so Hoyer is a fourth option at the position. The 35-year-old has familiarity with the team and is essentially insurance depending on how things play out in training camp.

Hoyer has bounced around the NFL after starting his career with the Patriots, but he has returned to New England multiple times. He was with the Patriots last season and started as the No. 2 quarterback behind Newton before falling to No. 3 behind Stidham. The veteran got one start last season after Newton tested positive for COVID-19 in Week 4, with New England suffering a 26-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in that game. Hoyer was benched for Stidham in that contest thanks to a poor performance.

In 2021, Newton is expected to start the year as the man under center. However, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has left the door open for a quarterback competition. One would assume Jones would be the top option to potentially unseat Newton if he impresses to start his NFL career, but Stidham could also make his own challenge.

The Patriots are looking to bounce back from a 7-9 campaign that saw them miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2008 campaign.
