Joejuan Williams is entering his second season with the New England Patriots and he could be asked to take a significant role on the defense in 2020. While the team prepares to enter a pivotal season, New England is issuing a challenge to Williams.

According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, Williams has been working on improving his versatility this offseason. Williams, who was New England's second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, is currently listed as a cornerback on the depth chart.

But with reigning Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore, Jason McCourty, and J.C. Jackson, Williams wasn't anything more than just a depth option in 2019. Altogether, the rookie out of Vanderbilt played in just 82 defensive snaps a season ago.

However, Bill Belichick has always been keen on having players that can play multiple positions on defense. Given that, Williams could become a Swiss-Army knife for the Patriots in 2020.

Standing at 6-foot-3, 212 pounds, Williams is larger than the prototypical cornerback in the NFL. Upon being selected by the Patriots, Williams actually received comparisons to Trumaine Johnson.

Nevertheless, Belichick can maximize Williams' size by moving him around the defense, depending on the opposition's personnel. If the opposing team has a big-bodied tight end, the Patriots could ask Williams to match up with him at safety.

Of course, New England is loaded at safety with Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, Adrian Phillips, and rookie Kyle Dugger. Though, seeing that Williams was a second-round pick in 2019, the Patriots want to see him evolve into a starter.

However, before he can achieve that, he might be asked to be a versatile weapon for Belichick in 2020.
