Veteran linebacker James Harrison has yet to call it quits, but he is also currently without a team. The 39-year-old Harrison, however, is reportedly keeping in touch with his most recent employer, according to Kevin Duffy of Masslive.com.

The Patriots have been in contact with free agent James Harrison regarding a possible return to New England, according to a source.

It could be remembered that Harrison had an acrimonious split with his long-time team Pittsburgh Steelers back in December, when the Steelers opted to release him. Harrison resented the fact that his role was greatly diminished in Pittsburgh, resulting in his departure from Pittsburgh.

Seizing an opportunity to add another veteran to their squad, the New England Patriots inked Harrison for the rest of the season. In New England, Harrison played 27 snaps in one regular season game, compared to only 40 in Pittsburgh across five contests. During the playoffs, Harrison had a decent contribution to the Pats’ defense, recording seven total tackles in three postseason outings.

Harrison will be 40 this May, but he is still viewed as a decent option for a team like New England, which could use his experience in its front seven. The Patriots are coming off a season in which they surrendered 4.7 yards per carry to opponents – third worst in the league defensively. Moreover, the Patriots were only 20th then against the run with 114.8 rushing yards allowed per contest.

With the Patriots operating on a tight cap space, Harrison is a possible cheap add to address an issue for the defending AFC champions.

James Harrison has 84.5 sacks and 573 total tackles in his illustrious 16-year career.
