The New England Patriots have released tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

The Patriots originally signed Seferian-Jenkins back in April.

He spent the 2018 campaign with the Jacksonville Jaguars but played in just five games before a core muscle injury knocked him out for the remainder of the season. During the time he was on the field, he logged 11 catches for 90 yards and a touchdown.

Seferian-Jenkins, who played his collegiate football at the University of Washington, was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round (38th pick overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.

He appeared in just nine contests during his rookie campaign due to injury, finishing with 21 receptions for 221 yards and a couple of scores. Then, the following year, Seferian-Jenkins was limited to just seven games, snaring 21 balls for 338 yards while reaching the end zone four times.

The Buccaneers then ended up releasing Seferian-Jenkins after two games in 2016 as a result of a DUI charge. He then went on to sign with the New York Jets and caught 10 passes for 110 yards in total on the season.

The 26-year-old then participated in 13 games with the Jets in 2017, marking his most extensive playing time in a single season in his NFL career. That year, he hauled in 50 receptions for 357 yards and three touchdowns.

Due to injuries and off-the-field issues, Seferian-Jenkins has never lived up to the fairly lofty expectations many had for him when he came out of college.

The Patriots are coming off of a 2018 campaign in which they won their sixth Super Bowl title.
